Edmonton has a lot to offer to
its residents. It offers a high standard of living and prosperity. The income
from abundant natural resources in Edmonton helps government to establish and
provide high quality public services.
It is a blooming metropolitan
city, the location of North America's largest shopping & entertainment
complex and a home to an active music and arts scene.
Let’s see how living in Edmonton
is like!
Leisure & Culture
Edmonton has a number of cultural
community hotspots, including Churchill Square in downtown, Whyte Avenue's
theaters and music venues. Churchill Square hosts most of the city's many
festivals and events including the Works Art & Design Festival, a major
annual summer art show, etc.
The West Edmonton Mall is the largest
shopping and entertainment complex in North America. Here you will find a big
water park, a lake, two mini golf courses, a Vegas-style casino, a skating
rink, an amusement park and about 21 movie theaters.
In addition to this, Edmonton
Fashion Week, Edmonton International Street Performers Festival, the Pride
Festival and K-Days are also celebrated with full glory and joyfulness.
You can further look forward to
visit, the Francis Winspear Centre for Music, one of the best concert halls in
Canada. This center hosts a range of shows all through the year, including
comedy, dance, pop concerts, etc.
With the Edmonton International
Fringe Festival, Edmonton Folk Music Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, Edmonton
Heritage Festival, the Whyte Avenue Art Walk, the Edmonton International Film
Festival and many more, living in Edmonton will be a never-ending celebration.
It is therefore no wonder why Edmonton is known as the festival city.
Transportation in Edmonton
Edmonton's city transit network
includes the extensive bus network and the Edmonton Light Rail Transit (LRT)
system, both operated by the Edmonton Transit System (ETS). Public transport is
quite popular in the city, and the LRT presently serves 15 locations from
Clareview to Century Park. This city is also a major hub for national rail
travel. Expenses for public transport here are reasonable. Several daily,
monthly and annual passes offer excellent value for money. Kids aged 5 years or
below travel for free. There are a number of discounts available for young ones
and for the seniors.
The roads are well maintained
here and the road system largely follows a grid pattern. In general, traffic is
light and rush hours are short in Edmonton.
Furthermore, the city has a
network of bicycle trails around the city (especially in the riverside areas),
which encourages a strong cycling culture in the city and is enjoyed by many
who live here.
Education in Edmonton
The number of private schools
here is very small. Most of the schools in Edmonton are funded publicly and
cater for preschool kids through to grade 12. There are many French language
schools too, that serves for the French speaking minority community.
There are a number of
Universities and colleges in Edmonton including the University of Alberta, MacEwan
University, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology(NAIT), the Concordia
University College of Alberta, Yellowhead Tribal College, The King's University
College, Taylor University College and Seminary, and NorQuest College. The
University of Alberta is serving around 40,000 students and is a home to the
second-largest research library in Canada. MacEwan University enrolls a similar
number of registrations, whilst the NAIT can boast over 60,000 students in
various diplomas, degrees and other programs.
